One of the ways this game managed to to help increase its allure was a further difficulty mode called Pro-Sim mode, which aimed for ultra realistic cars, physics and handling.

Again, the series increased the number of tracks (48 this time) as well as fictional offerings and the reintroduction of Surfers Paradise, which had been sorely lacking from its predecessor. Instead the action was directed solely at you rather than through a character. No more than two years later in 2004, McKane was gone. That would change over the next two games however. A lonely figure in the garage with his car - McKane wasn’t very likable. This was also backed up with a total of 42 cars that featured improved physics and damage modelling.įor the most part though, the menus feel very static (compared to how they would turn out in later games such as GRID and DiRT 2 and 3), which also sadly plays in to the cliche a bit more. Other touring car formulas like DTM and V8 Supercars came on board (13 in total) and with that brought a host of tracks from their native lands, including Adelaide, Bathurst, Nurburgring and Zolder along with 33 other tracks. The titular British Touring Car Championship made a return after the previous game took it out (with manufacturers pulling from the series).

TOCA Race Driver saw the only appearance of Ryan McKane, a young racer who witness his father’s death on the racetrack as a child and has of course followed in his footsteps along with his incredibly successful older brother, complete with the maturity the Tom Cruise displayed in Days of Thunder… It hasn’t aged well.īut in the game, racing really takes front and centre. It’s amazing that modern games still have storylines that can be just phoned in to the point of grating extra cheese on to a four cheese pizza with a cheesy dough (see recent Need for Speed games and The Crew series). The first game in the series gave us an incredibly cliche storyline. Adding to this was the much improved handling and damage model of the cars across the four years before the series became Race Driver Grid. Starting at quite an early stage of the 6th generation of consoles the game progressed to be one of the best looking by the third entry. Not only in your ability but in the game as well. Of course the one thing that permeated the series as a whole is improvement. While others have unlocked classes of cars rather than specific motorsports TOCA Race Driver managed to craft a narrative (although it was occasionally cliche) and have a good and rewarding progression of cars. One thing that other games have strived for since, and arguably only Codemasters has really achieved it, is a career mode that actually takes you from small time rookie racer to big time superstar, following various different racing formulas including the titular Touring Car. You’ll find multiple Scotsmen across the TOCA series of games telling you that you should do better, despite your success. Many different games now use a more narrative based career, with Playground Games’ Forza Horizon series often taking the approach of having a main character that acts as an organiser and another as a PA. You’ll also find some of its stylistic marks across many racing games outside of developer Codemasters. Compared to the previous 2 badges where there are 6 events, there are only 3 events.Such is the legacy of the TOCA Race Driver series that we undoubtedly take certain things for granted or certainly find things we wish were better implemented in games.

It takes 250 000 reputation points from the A.R.L Rookie and Pro Badge to unlock the National Badge.

The longest and hardest events are in this badge.

Half of the events are Pro Tuned/Classic + Pro Muscle in the Rookie Badge. It is usually where the first events for the player are played. The first A.R.L Badge is unlocked after the first race in the GRID World mode.
